Jeff Bezos and Amazon
Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announced late last year that he is looking to build a second headquarters, which will be “a full equal” to the original Seattle location. Jeff Bezos is also coming to speak in Dallas.
Dallas is an early frontrunner to land the multi-billion dollar company’s newest office, mainly for its international airport and having the necessary space available for such a large project.
Bezos is making a visit to a place he once called home during his childhood, by visiting the Lone Star State.
The business mogul spent his summers as a child on his grandfather’s ranch in Catullo, located southwest of San Antonio. He attended elementary school in Houston. He founded Blue Origin, an aerospace company, located in Van Horn and he is also cousin to Texas country music star, George Strait.
Amazon in Dallas
Amazon already has a large presence in North Texas, with fulfillment centers in Dallas, Fort Worth, Coppell, and Haslet. Whichever city Bezos chooses as his new location will add up to 50,000 jobs to the surrounding area, which is the main attraction for some of the country’s major cities.
Dallas isn’t the only major city in Texas vying for the opportunity to host Amazon’s newest location. San Antonio, Houston, and Austin also have made bids, but most believe of the three that Dallas will have the best shot.
The company also has some preferences rather than conditions to its new location:
- A “stable and business-friendly environment”
- An urban area with strong technical talent
- “Communities that think big and creatively when considering locations and real estate options”
- An area with more than 1 million people
Dallas meets all of the preferences listed above. The University of Texas at Dallas is known for its tech-focused graduates looking for new jobs upon graduation; the 2010 census puts the Dallas population at just over 1 million but has grown to 1.3 million as of 2016.
Amazon says it has received 238 proposals from 54 states, provinces, territories and districts in North America. Although most won’t have a fighter’s chance, it still doesn’t make the cities that have less of a chance of trying to sway Bezos. Dallas along with Austin Texas were amongst the 20 chosen as finalists.
When is he coming?
Jeff Bezos will be visiting our great city on April 20th. He will be the featured speaker at the three-day forum hosted by President George W. Bush and Laura Bush, Closing Conversation of the George W. Bush Presidential Forum on Leadership. It is to be held in partnership with SMU.
